* Why you love photography?
“Photography is the perfect way to capture moments in time, which provide evidence of the moment for a lifetime. Whether I’m photographing the beauty of a sunrise, horses grazing in the afternoon sun, or a look between friends, I believe every picture tells a story. Life is the composition of many stories and as a photographer I am a storyteller of life. This is why I love photography.”
* Your favorite type of photography?
“Since I was a child, I have been profoundly impacted by nature. I love being outdoors and when there are animals present – bonus! Photographing nature is my ultimate favorite! National Geographic has always been my favorite publication and from it I’ve learned so much of the wonders of this planet. I will be forever curious about the geography, and creatures, both human and animal, which inhabit this beautiful planet. Being able to photograph them in their natural setting is only icing on the cake!”
* A funny/interesting photography story?
“On a recent study abroad trip to Thailand, myself and 3 other students had the opportunity to stay with a host family in Ban Phon. One morning, we were invited to participate in giving alms to the monks from area temples and I took several photos. After the monks had departed, I continued to take photos of the villagers who were excited to have students from American in their village. This group included Mae Pa, the woman with whom we were staying who spoke no English. I speak only a few phrases of Thai but I managed thru gestures to ask her if she’d like to take a picture of the other student and myself with the villagers. She seemed eager and I gave her a demonstration of how to look through the viewfinder and showed her which button to press to take the photo. After a few moments we managed to get organized and she took the shot. When I went over to view the photo she’d taken, I saw she had taken a photo of the tops of the heads of only two people in the group of 10-12. When I grinned and showed her the photo she’d taken, she laughed out loud and covered her face. The people of Thailand are often quiet and reserved and this was the first time I we had seen her laugh. She and I began laughing and she motioned for the others to look at the photo she’d taken. Everyone gathered to see the photo and we all stood laughing. It was an awesome moment of connection where our inability to speak one another’s language was superseded by our ability to find humor in the situation. We all laughed through the next round of photos…with me behind the lens!”
* Photography tips or tricks?
“The best tip (and lesson) I can share with other photographers is to make it a habit to take your camera everywhere!! There have been several occasions where I have found myself without my camera and have had the most amazing opportunity for making some great photos. Believe me, telling someone about a fabulous shot will pale greatly in comparison to showing them the shot!! I cringe when I think of the award winning shots I’ve missed simply because I didn’t have my camera handy. Furthermore, it does one no good to have the camera with you only to find your battery is dead or your memory card is full. ALWAYS carry extra!!! The best photo opportunities, in my opinion, are those which come about unexpectedly. Be prepared!!”
* Comments about your web site design?
“For a couple of years now, I have had people telling me I should consider creating a website of my work. As a photographer, artist and interior design student, I have a very busy life and could not fathom where I would find the time to look at a website much less create one. Then, one day a friend and fellow Smugger recommended I take a look at her site and see if SmugMug would be of interest to me. After viewing her site, I could not wait to find out more about SmugMug! I began the 14-day; however, became a Pro member before the trial period ended. I was hooked!! Everything I could imagine needing in a site provider was available, and there were tons of features I had not even considered. The bonus? Minimal cost! I love SmugMug and tell everyone who asks. The SmugMug Hero’s, with their fabulous costumes, really are just that…HERO’S! My questions (of which there have been many) are always answered promptly and professionally. SmugMug definitely runs a top-notch operation, and I look forward to partnering with them for years to come!
Once I began getting my feet wet creating my site, I realized how much time it would require me to create a site I would be proud to call mine. In came jR Customization to save the day. jR CUstomization worked with me to create a logo and website design which accurately depicts the site I imagined…only better!!
Although there are many avenues I would still like to pursue with my site, I know with the folks at jR Customization and SmugMug on my team, my goals are attainable! I’m glad I found SmugMug!”
